[CLOSED] The Whale & Ale

EDITOR'S NOTE: This location has permanently closed. An updated version of this article (21 November 2024) is available as part of the Historical section of our Substack page. Check that out here:

A logo calls this San Pedro favorite a "British Isles Pub," the website says "English Steakhouse" in the title, and the about section promises the feeling of a classic Dublin pub. Is The Whale & Ale having an identity crisis or are they just good at a lot of things?

Either way, the steaks are not the number one reason to come here, that would of course be for the excellent traditional fish & chips ($15, below). They use Fuller's London Pride ale to batter the Atlantic cod before frying, making an excellent result.

Squeeze on some lemon juice and use ample dips of tartar sauce, dump the malt vinegar over the fish or chips or both, and this is dining in style. Especially when paired with a pint of Guinness, which they pour pretty well here.

A more recent visit had the opportunity to sample the shepherd's pie ($18, below), an unfortunate bone dry affair that required way too much HP sauce to make edible. The bar seemed to be having staffing issues like many eateries around town these days, so hopefully this can explain the problems.

Maybe wait for those to clear up before ordering the beef Wellington as well. For now, stick to the fish & chips.

  1. I love the ambiance there. Feels a bit like a chain pub... probably not exactly what they were going for but it has its own sort of charm!
