Crystal Thai & Cambodian Cuisine

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ญ CAMBODIA

EDITOR'S NOTE: An updated version of this article (29 November 2023) is available as part of the Historical section of our Substack page. Check that out here:

Alone in 2015, I made my first ever visit down to the harbor and eventually Cambodia Town in Long Beach, where foods in restaurants seem to be even better than in Cambodian establishments. For this reason, no need to stray to the Thai side of the menu.

That visit awarded me with this fine ban chao (below), the Cambodian version of the Vietnamese dish more commonly recognized as banh xeo. This rice flour "pancake" is stuffed with whatever you want and can be either with meat or vegetarian. A plate of lettuce arrives to use as wrappers for bites of the pancake, all of which should be dipped in the sauce that comes served on the side.

Ground pork ban chao.

The rest of the place might be empty when you visit depending on the time, or alive with big Cambodian families like when I visited. I only wish I could have joined them and tried the feasts that were on their tables.
