Welcome to Eat the World Los Angeles's 2022 World Cup coverage, which will seek to experience the tournament with the people of all 32 nations here in the Southland. Much like the coverage of food on the website, the tournament will be approached from a cultural angle, and even readers who are not into The Beautiful Game or sports in general should still find these articles interesting. Many of these events will of course take place in the region's restaurants and food will come into play more often than not.
Ecuador had the pleasure of drawing a spot in Group A that pit them
against the host nation Qatar in the very first match of the tournament.
They survived the grueling qualifying of CONMEBOL in South America and a
legal challenge from Chile who said they were playing with an
ineligible player. The last World Cup they were a part of was 2014 and
this will be their 4th appearance in history.
Rather than join the hosts Qatar for the first match, an invitation from two lovely people who have been featured on this website before was accepted. Their Larchmont/Hollywood home is the site of a weekends-only restaurant that cooks some of the only Ecuadorian food in town, and also shows matches from back in Ecuador for its customers. For the Copa Mundial, many of the city's Ecuadorian residents descended once again on the place they love so that they could celebrate or commiserate with their people.
Upon arrival at just after 06:30, Alejandro Platon was busy testing TV signals and audio hookups while his wife Carmen was with other family members preparing the feast in the kitchen that everyone would enjoy. When the breaker shut the power down at 07:15, a double nervousness started to creep in, but this was thankfully temporary and power was restored without pause for the 08:00 kickoff and for the rest of the match. The only hitch for the perfect event thrown by the perfect hosts.
Over coffee, empanadas de viento, and bolones de chicharrรณn y queso, the mood was thankfully celebratory almost from the first whistle. Ecuador scored inside of two minutes, only to have their goal taken back by a very questionable offside call. Without replays or explanations, it seemed that the fix was really in thanks to FIFA and Qatar. The announcers on Telemundo were absolutely dumbfounded.
Thankfully for Ecuador's sake, they came to play while the Qatar side were visibly crushed by the weight of the event. Ecuador scored two more goals in the first half that were not called off and went into halftime with a sizeable advantage. Apparently all the money in the world could not buy this one for the host nation.
In the second half, while people finished plates of seco de chivo and one enterprising women sold jerseys and other Ecuadorian merchandise, the match seemed to get closer and Qatar found their legs. Unfortunately for them they could not find the back of the net, even while their fans (handsomely paid, for sure) were in full voice until the final whistle.
At least three TV stations made their way to the Platon residence on this occasion, finding a joyous crowd for their B-rolls which will probably be shown on the evening news. Once the match was over, everyone moved outside for more fun and music to make sure the day was properly celebrated for Ecuador. The temperatures in almost-winter midday Los Angeles were just about the same as those in Qatar late in the evening.
