Full disclosure, this is the team I support and this article will switch to first person. As a former member of the American Outlaws supporters group, I found that I was coming into contact with too many people that were still of the opinion that the so-called United States is an exceptional country and it sometimes did not feel good to chant "USA!" with them. For the last couple years, I have joined a few Barra 76 events, which for this World Cup (the group's first having been born in 2019) are being held at Boomtown Brewery downtown.

Barra 76 feels a lot like Los Angeles and in fact was born here in the city despite now having several chapters in other states. American Outlaws was born in Nebraska and often has that feeling, although some members are from different backgrounds and genuinely good people. If you grew up wanting to support the US national team despite having connections through family to other countries, Barra 76 is a natural fit, not just for the Spanish-speaking folks that make up a big part of the membership. The people that make up the group seem more like the team on the pitch.

On a day that the United States might look back upon and regret not holding onto all three points, the gathering was festive with a strong sense of tension hovering over fans who had not watched their club in the World Cup for eight years. The young team came out well and took the game to Wales, leading at halftime 1:0 but conceding late in the second to end in a draw.

If there was one drawback to the event, it was the LAFC fans who showed up in club kits and started their chants. When the crowd was angry at Bale, who plays for LAFC but was today the enemy on Wales and scored against the USA, classist chants of "Fuck you Carson" were thrown around. Unfortunate.
