There may be no more appropriate place to hold a World Cup watch party than in the main hall and worship space of a church, because football is a religion in most places that it is popular. In Yorba Linda for Denmark's second match against France, early morning light was streaming through the stained glass windows, setting the mood for the top ranked nations in Group D to clash.
While Denmark was already covered during their first match, this event was too much to pass up, a combination watch party and julemarked, a Danish Christmas market that would start immediately following the match. They also set up a full spread for breakfast in the back of the church with warm bread, butter, jam, cheese, and coffee. This table proved to be very popular throughout the duration of the match, especially when some sweet pastries (Danish?) arrived.
Lots of blond children were in attendance, some even wearing knitted viking helmets. Most of the crowd came in Danish jerseys or other Denmark-related clothing. The projector showed the English language Fox Sports broadcast, and when the match started, the family-friendly event was much more focused than you would expect.
So far, Denmark is not having the same type of run of form that they had in the Euros when they made the semifinals, and today's (probably expected) loss to reigning champion France puts them in a difficult situation on matchday three when they will need to beat Australia and make sure to have a better goal differential than Tunisia shall they beat a France side that will probably be resting some of their stars since they are already guaranteed passage to the knockout round.
