Like their Danish counterparts, expats from Belgium meet for their matches at Joxer Daly's in Culver City, which if you could not tell from the photo above, pours a pretty perfect pint of Guinness especially when Gene is behind the bar. For their latest match at 05:00 Sunday morning, the sleepy crowd brought donuts all the way from Simi Valley to give a sugar jolt of energy to everyone.
Unfortunately nothing else besides the coffee did anything to wake the group up, as the biggest cheer of the first half was probably the VAR decision that negated a Moroccan goal. Out of ideas throughout the whole match, it cannot save Belgium in the second half and Morocco slide two by keeper Thibaut Courtois.
Belgium is kind of lucky to already have three points on the board, as they were seriously outplayed in their first match against Canada but were able to pull off a 1:0 victory. Because of that, they still have a shot, but will now have to play Croatia in their third match, who have probably looked the best in the group so far after dismantling Canada later in the day.
The "golden generation" of Belgium seems to have lost their flare, not quite bringing any tournament silverware home like many expected. The 2018 World Cup semifinal run was fun to watch, but looks to remain the high water mark. This just goes to show that the use of the term should be saved for teams that actually succeed rather than those that are good on paper.
