While weekend matches always have the family-friendly option of the St. Anthony's Croation church in Chinatown, most people who are really into football head down to San Pedro and the Croatian American Club. Weekend or not, this hall is serious about their team, and were even open last week for the 02:00 match that opened the tournament for Croatia, grilling up ฤevapi for fans.
The club hosts a wide range of events, and as such has a full bar that is of course open no matter what time of the morning it happens to be. The main hall itself has high ceilings and plenty of space, making it the perfect place to watch football with at least 100 friends. The TV is hooked up to a sound system, so game audio can hardly be better.
As the name suggests, the main room is filled with both Croatian and US flags, which surround the screen and fly proudly on each wall, with scenes from the picturesque Croatian coastline in between. One of the Croatian flags was removed by a industrious guest, who waved it when the team needed cheering on more.
A goal by Canada after 68 seconds shocks the crowd, who did not come here to see their team lose. It happened to be Canada's first ever World Cup goal (they failed to score in three matches the only other time they were in it), scored by their biggest star, but its special nature was lost on this partisan crowd. Luckily for the fans here, Croatia struck back twice in the first half and chants of "HR-VAT-SKA!" rang around the hall.
Canada did not seem to have it in them to regroup and fight back on the day, and Croatia put another two in as the second half wore on, claiming all three points and the top of the Group F table. Everyone would go home happy on this day, even if they had to find their ฤevapi elsewhere.
The trophy case on the way out displayed some champions from the club, which of course has had its own team for many years. Many stopped for one last drink or a round of celebratory shots at the bar, and went back to their days as the rest of the city was just getting started on this Sunday at 10:00.
