When Mรฉxico plays in the Copa Mundial, there may be an electricity jolt not unlike during a heat wave when everyone cranks up their air conditioning. Practically every television in the area is going to be on, with the volume turned up to high. Walk into your local bagel shop, barber, gym, or anything in between and you can watch it, probably with some fans of El Tri right beside you or at least glancing from another room if they happen to be working at the time.

There are also a number a fun events that are always planned, with all types of venues, sponsors, and entertainment. If you happen to follow the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet on any social media, you will have seen them advertising a fun event for weeks now with big screens to watch the match and live music afterwards. Sponsored by Estrella Jalisco, there was also the promise of ice cold refreshments for that mid-morning thirst.

Fans gather around large screens at event stage well before kickoff with jerseys and Mexican flags

This was not a regular swap meet day, but some industrious folks had parked in the front lot very early and set up areas to sell their goods to those streaming into the event. Once inside, more vendors and trucks selling food and drinks surrounded the stage and seating areas, so whether you were in the mood for churros y cafรฉ or tacos, birria, and micheladas they would have you covered. More entrepreneurs circulated through the crowd selling jerseys and flags to the few fans who did not bring enough from home.

When the match started, the Mexican fans in Qatar could be heard in full voice, olรฉ-ing the Polish team as Mรฉxico passed the ball around their back line and the fans at the swap meet joined them. The rest of the match slowed down and flattened out, with lots of patient waiting both in the stands and in Santa Fe Springs mixed with only a few oohs and ahhs. Nothing quite hit in the first half. Fan noise would wax and wain, almost as if they were sending their energy to Qatar and the players when they seemed down.

In the second half even less happened, except for what seemed to be the dagger in the heart of Mรฉxico: a 56th minute penalty in the box sent Robert Lewandowski, arguably the world's best striker to the spot for a penalty kick. Heads were suddenly dropped and held in hands, eyes closed, and a hush came over the crowd. But as he tends to do in big situations, portero Memo Ochoa came up with the save of his life and kept the match scoreless.

The crowd erupted as the players on the field high-fived and butted chests and celebrated their goalkeeper. A few beers were tossed as they tend to be during goals, and most likely a couple babies in their carriages had their first taste of alcohol. Mรฉxico would settle for the draw, but it could have been worse. They will need to step up their game quite a bit in their next match against Argentina, who will be desperate after their surprise loss to Saudi Arabia.

More fans seen from the back of the event area

After the match, the event turned into a concert, with Marina El Cid, Mazatlรกn's finest Su Majestad Mi Banda El Mexicano de Casimiro taking the stage. It was probably not the joyous festival everyone was expecting or at least hoping for, but music always lifts the soul regardless.
