Moroccan watch parties were quite difficult to find during the group stage, as their matches were all at pretty ridiculous times. While a fan or two was in most of Anaheim's late night hookah spots for the first 02:00 match against Croatia, nothing was planned communally. When Morocco won their group and then became the fourth African nation to make it to the quarterfinals, the desire to cheer together ramped up exponentially and many in Los Angeles's Moroccan community decided to head to The Village Idiot.
This bar started posting World Cup stuff well before the tournament started, hung the flags of every nation in its rafters, and has been opening early for many of the matches with their full bar and kitchen. It has become immensely popular with fans who live in the area, and with the more popular England-France match starting later on this day, filled up with seat-reservering Europeans quite early.
Most of the Moroccans who wanted to come and cheer with others made it inside, but some that arrived ten minutes after kickoff had to watch through the windows as the bar hit capacity and had to limit entry. This only made the scene even more vivid, with flags waving in the windows and cars passing by honking in support. Eventually the bar manager opened the big windows so that these people could more fully enjoy the atmosphere and hear the match.
When Morocco scored just before halftime, the bar went predictably crazy. Even those that had showed up to cheer on England or France later joined in the fun of cheering for the underdog and were caught up in the passion of the Moroccans. The entire second half was an exercise in nail biting, as Morocco hunkered down and relied on their excellent defense to keep Portugal out of their goal.
Eventually and satisfyingly, they were able to do it, sending Ronaldo out of his last World Cup in tears. Morocco became the first African nation to make the World Cup semifinals, and now will probably have the support of most fans around the world that do not have their nation in the tournament any longer. Having beaten both nations of the Iberian Peninsula, they look to push further into Europe in their next match when they face their former colonizers France.
After the final whistle, the party moved out on the street and musical
instruments suddently appeared from the trunks of cars. Singing and
dancing and many more car horns made sure everyone in Fairfax was aware of
the joy that came on this morning for The Atlas Lions.
