After two days off following an amazing run of 56 matches in 17 straight days, it was good to have World Cup football back and two great quarterfinals. As the biggest groups and parties have already been attended, those towards the end of this run are a little smaller, while others unfortunately did not exist at all. After the fun of last summer's Euro Cup watch parties, a trip out to Playa del Rey and Mo's Place was scheduled for the Netherlands big matchup against Argentina.
Mo himself is a Dutch American, but the nation's matches up until this point have all been much earlier than the bar's standard opening time so the usual group that gets together here did not have a chance to do so, seeing as though this tournament was not in the summer. But for this 11:00 match, he set out his big bright Holland banner and its emblazoned Dutch lion, and put on his freshest orange t-shirt, even if it was closer to coral.
Argentina took the lead in the first half on some complete filth from Messi after a mostly cagey and uneventful period, then scored another on a penalty in the second, seemingly putting the match to bed. Some older folks who seem like they have lived in Los Angeles for their entire lives and might just be a part of the fabric of this bar are suddenly jubilant along with Mo when the Netherlands scores their first and does not give up.
When a set piece well into added extra time provides another Dutch goal to equalize, the place goes berserk except for the one woman who showed up in a Messi jersey and the two working in the kitchen that had been supporting Argentina all along. The Dutch ancestry, no matter how many generations removed, is alive and well in Playa del Rey on this early afternoon. Unfortunately for this group Argentina eventually takes the match on penalties and moves on, but not before a beautiful quarterfinal.
