Continental Delicatessen might just be the friendliest place you ever go for a meal. Run by a tireless German-descended family, the small deli with attached restaurant is also the home of Anaheim-based supporters of Bayern Munich, who made up a good portion of the attendees on this Germany match versus Spain, a must win for Die Mannschaft.
The vibe of the place has the feel of the midwest (in a good way), where so many families have German roots and bratwurst is king even if the people are several generations removed from the homeland. The food follows suit, possibly not satisfying a discerning German tourist, but totally fine for its US customer base.
For the World Cup, the deli added to its already terrific football vibe with flags, tournament posters, and blow up footballs hung from the ceiling. They made sure to open early for any Germany matches that started before doors are usually unlocked, and their loyal customers showed up en masse. Plates of bratwurst were starting to be cooked over an hour before the match when the first groups arrived to secure their spots close to the television.
After losing their first match to Japan, Germany was in the unsavory position of needing at least a draw to stay alive against a Spanish team that won their first match by seven goals. The first half was noticeably tense and scoreless, with neither team wanting to make the first mistake. Spain tempered themselves for their second match, knowing they were playing a desperate side.
Spain pulled ahead in the 62nd minute and the mood got visibly upset inside the restaurant. Spanish striker รlvaro Morata's name may or may not have been taken in vain multiple times. Germany had their chances but were now a goal down with their tournament hanging in the balance. With less than ten minutes left in the 90, Germany's extra large substitute Niclas Fรผllkrug leveled the score and the crowd went wild.
Coupled with the surprise victory of Costa Rica over Japan earlier in the day and this draw for Germany, they are in a good position to move forward if they can beat the Ticos on matchday three. As everyone got up relieved and very full and tipsy, the family all wished them well and said "See you Thursday!"
