While the Argentinian community in Southern California is thriving and quite large, the Uruguayan folks are very small in number. There is no restaurant that focuses exclusively on the food of this tiny nation, but in the know eaters in Orange County have two options at their disposable. Both are Argentinian meat markets by the look of things, but their Uruguayan owners/chefs sneak delicious foods of their country in the mix.
At El Gaucho Meat Market in Anaheim (the other is Puerto Madero in Santa Ana), the first hint is that the Uruguayan flag flies first in a row of three on the logo that also includes the USA and Argentina. The markets themselves are filled with plenty of products from Argentina, but also include those of Uruguay and many from other South American countries.
El Gaucho also has an obvious passion for football, with a full color and very detailed stadium painted around the dining room. It only adds to the experience when fans come here to eat and watch matches on the weekend, or at even bigger times like these. The flags of every Central American, South American, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean nation fly proudly alongside those of Uruguay and Argentina.
Many fans arrived after kickoff, frantically finding a spot in the back lot and running in to miss as little action as possible. Those that had planned ahead ordered food and ate before the match started, standing and singing their national anthem as it came on TV. Adorned in the light blue of La Celeste or the Uruguay flag itself, hopes were high at the start.
And what types of foods did they order, you say? Quite an array, but there were at least a few chivitos (above), the sandwich Uruguay can call all its own despite the cuisines of the two countries having a lot of similarities. The unmistakable national dish of Uruguay, the chivito is an always impressive stack of foods caught between bread.
There is steak, and ham, and bacon with an array of olives and other vegetables that all fall in your lap if you are not careful. Truthfully it was the highlight of the day, as Uruguay seemed as uninspired as ever somehow and basically gave the match to Portugal. Uruguay has it all to do now, needing only a win against Ghana in the third match on Friday and a little help from Portugal in not letting South Korea beat them.
