Full disclosure, because of the first week sickness that kept me out of commission for two days, I lost 7 planned events and it was a real setback. To begin to make up for it, I watched the two halves of this match at separate places (see previous article for Uruguay). A short twenty minute drive meant that barely any of the match had to be sacrificed.
Upon arrival at the D.E.S., the crowd had moved mostly outside during halftime of a fairly boring scoreless draw. Men discussed the failures of the team to score with their drinks and cigarettes while children ran around the courtyard and others stared into their phones. More rounds of drinks were purchased before the second half kicked off, and everybody took the seat they had for the first half.
The sports bar/private club on the grounds is normally a fairly sleepy affair, but holds such a history with all the photographs, plaques, and trophies that surround the room. It makes watching a match here even more fun than when they screen events outdoors in the courtyard. Drinks are cheap, spirits are high, and a wide array of the Portuguese diaspora and Portuguese Americans come to party together.
It did not take long for Portugal to take the lead on lackluster Uruguay in the second half, to the delight of the partisan crowd. A second via an extra time penalty shot put the match, and the opponents, down for the count. Everybody got to leave happy on this day, as Portugal claimed top spot in the group barring some major surprises on matchday 3.
