Now that Japan has qualified for the knockout rounds, beating international powerhouses Germany and Spain along the way, it is a bit sad that there has not been a big watch party organized by and for the large Japanese community in Los Angeles. Some of the usual suspects like Far Bar in Little Tokyo figured all the matches were much to early to open, and the restaurant inside Torrance's Miyako Hybrid Hotel was firm each of the half dozen times some annoying World Cup enthusiast called to see if they were opening just 30 minutes before their usual schedule to accommodate kickoff time.
Shout-out to wonderful Torrance staple Yorkshire Square Brewing, a spot with great hand-pulled cask ales and customers who fly from San Francisco in their private jets to join Leeds United fans on weekends. They opened for quite a few World Cup matches and despite not having England or USA on the schedule on this day, were open well before kickoff. In 2018, decent crowds of Japanese from nearby made their way here according to the owner, but on this day there was just a smattering of non-affiliated fans.
Halftime came about 15 minutes after Ise-shima opened in the hotel, so the short three minute drive over was made to see what was happening. The match was on both of the TVs in the bar and lounge area, and a few people had sat to enjoy lunch and had their attention captured. The hotel is used by Japan Airlines to put up their crews, so some were headed out back to the airport and others were arriving after their international flights.
One crew in particular seemed surprised beyond belief when they entered the lounge while their rooms were still being prepared and saw that Japan had taken the lead on Spain. From that point on, the restaurant was the place to be in all of Southern California to cheer on the Samurai Blue. Businessmen were postponing their meetings and the crews were not interested in going back to their rooms at all.
A hushed and controlled Japanese audience turned into a surprisingly rambunctious crew, one businessman even leaving his seat for a round of high fives after the second Japanese goal was scored. It was an agonizing last 40 minutes and then an additional seven extra for stoppage time. Japan fought for their World Cup lives and held Spain from scoring again.
In doing so, they moved on to the final 16 while winning the group. Japan will face Croatia in the round of 16, a match that starts at 07:00 Pacific Time, which just so happens to be the time the breakfast buffet opens at the hotel restaurant.
