On the 75 minute or so trip up to Palmdale a light rain was falling, wreaking havoc on southbound lanes of the 5 and the 14 as Antelope Valley residents made their way to work. Thankfully the northbound highways were free and clear and arrival for the 07:00 kickoff was not delayed. The Black Stars still had a shot to qualify for the knockout round, but they would have to beat their old nemesis Uruguay to get there.
The owners and their son were the only people to leave the house early for football on this day unfortunately, but being with them made the journey up so worth it. After a first half that saw Ghana disjointed and Uruguay suddenly find form and take a two goal lead, they got much more vocal in the second half and did their very best to urge on their country all the way from Southern California.
No more goals would come in the second half, but not for a lack of trying by the team or many words (shouts) of wisdom from Ponia's proprietors. Ghana would bow out of the tournament in the group stage, but would have some delight after South Korea took the lead on Portugal in the other match and suddenly Uruguay needed one more goal to advance.
Ghana, even though they were going for their own goals, would not allow it, and scenes of delight from back home showed pretty clearly how much they still held that 2010 Luis Suarez handball in their collective conscious. Back in Palmdale, unfortunately the kitchen was not open but the owners graciously brought out some snacks during the match. If you are thinking of trying Ghanaian food, do not hesitate to make your way here for some of the most ambitious West African cooking in the country.
