Sénégal came into the 2022 cup as the highest ranked team from Africa and some very high hopes resting on them from back home. They are one of only three nations from the continent to make the tournament's quarterfinals along with Ghana and Cameroon, eventually losing to Turkey for a spot in the semifinals in Japan during the 2002 World Cup. Many wrote them off when their best player Sadio Mané was injured just before the start of the tournament, but they have still showed well.

In Los Angeles the community is not very large and unfortunately does not have a place of its own where you can find food and culture, but sometimes during big matches when their schedules allow, many Senegalese come to the Aziz Gallerie in Leimert Park to celebrate their Lions of Teranga. The nation's first three group stage matches were all on weekdays at ridiculous times, but their round of 16 matchup against England (more lions, only three though) was perfectly placed on a Sunday at 11:00.

The group is small, but they prepared a feast of all types with bags of freshly baked bread and plenty to stuff inside of the rolls. The gallery smelled like Sénégal and boiling milk, preferred over water for mixing in instant coffee. Rows of seating were set up, but most of the biggest fans took the first row and calmed their nerves by chatting and joking together.

The match remained scoreless until the 38th minute, when the England goal that seemed to be inevitable finally happened. Another one in the last minute of the half was the dagger that made the crowd put their heads in their hands. A few nibbles during halftime and some time to recover from that shock got a few of the group cheering again, shouting to everyone else that the comeback was possible.

Unfortunately Sénégal finally missed their star attacker Mané in this match and just never found the threat to get back in the contest. A third England goal made the game that much more difficult, and by that time people started being thankful for each other's company rather than holding their wishes on a positive ending in the match.

The result was the third of four in the round of 16 that saw a European side knock off a nation from the rest of the world. The last World Cup that had a winner from outside of that continent was 2002 when Sénégal made the quarterfinals and Brazil won it all in Japan on the back of two (original) Ronaldo goals.
