Since Barcelona supporters from Los Angeles to Catalonia often have no interest in supporting the national team of Spain, the group to look for that does is Real Madrid. The club based in the Spanish capital have plenty of support here in Southern California, completely packing out gigantic Tom's Watch Bar downtown during their recent Champions League final with lines wrapping around the block.
The previous two group stage parties were held at Golden Road Brewing, but this round of 16 showdown with Morocco had to be moved to 33 Taps because of its earlier start time. Those occasions were much more well-attended, but a straggle of about 10 Spanish fans came to cheer on their team against Morocco. After watching Spain fail to really fight back against Japan in their final group stage match, it appeared they preferred this matchup on the "easy" side of the bracket. Would it come back to haunt them?
The low attendance seemed to show that Spanish fans may have already been looking ahead to their quarterfinal matchup on the weekend, not thinking rising early or taking off work on this Tuesday was all that necessary seeing has how they were expected to beat Morocco. Spain squandered a few chances and even glanced a post in the dying seconds, but Morocco never seemed over-matched and deserved the draw.
The penalty shootout that came after thirty minutes of extra time was farcical, with Spain unable to put any of their three chances past the Moroccan keeper and flailing out of the tournament in spectacular fashion. Finally an upset in the round of 16 made for more fun, but unfortunately not for this group, who have not been able to relive the magic of the amazing run Spain went on from 2008 to 2012.
